I learnt this recipe from my mom and it is such a great alternative if you are bored of sambar and chutney as a side dish for south Indian breakfast like idli , dosa appam or idiyappam.

The best thing about this Tomato kurma Thakkali kurma recipe is how quick it is to make and also needs just two vegetables onions and tomatoes to make it.

Ingredients :

To Blend :

  • Oil 1 tsp 
  • Fennel Seeds 1 tsp 
  • Kasa Kasa 1/2 tsp 
  • 3 tbsp roasted channa dal , 
  • shredded coconut – 3 tbsp
  • 350 GMs tomatoes 
  • 2 green chillis 
  • Water 1/2 cup

To make Kurma :

  • Oil 2-3 tsp
  • Mustard seeds 1 tsp 
  • Fennel seeds 1 tsp 
  • Curry leaves 10 -1 2 leaves 
  • Small cinnamon stick 
  • Bay leaf – small 1 no, 
  • Cloves – 3 no.s 
  • Star Anise – 1 whole 
  • Onions 1 large onion thinly sliced
  • Ginger garlic paste – 1.5 tsp 
  • Salt to taste 
  • Red chilli powder 1.5 tsp 
  • Corriander powder 1 tsp 
  • Turmeric powder 1/2 tsp
  • Water 3 & 1/2 cups
  • Corriander leaves for garnish

How to make Tomato kurma | Thakkali Kurma :

1 : Heat a kadai, add oil and add tomatoes, green chillies and cook until the tomatoes turn soft and juicy. 

Turn off the heat, add in the fennel seeds, coconut, roasted channa dal, Kasa kasa and give it a mix. Cook it down and blend to a smooth paste with 1/2 cup water.

2 : Clean the same kadai, add oil to it, and add mustard seeds. Allow it to crackle fully and then add in fennel seeds, curry leaves, cloves, cinnamon stick , star anise, bay leaf and sauté for a few seconds. 

3 : Add in the sliced onions, add salt and ginger garlic paste. Cook the onions until soft and translucent on medium flame. 

4 : Add Red chilli powder, corriander powder, turmeric powder and cook for 1 – 2 mins on medium flame.

5 : Add the blended paste from step 1 , measure and add water and bring it to a simmer for 10 – 12 minutes.

  • 1 tsp Corriander powder
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
  • cups Water
  • Corriander leaves for garnish
