Kadai Tofu Recipe | Vegan Tofu and Capsicum Curry

Kadai Tofu recipe  is a simple Tofu and capsicum stir fry.

Kadai Tofu is inspired from kadai paneer, from northern india. I was working on a few Indian vegan recipes for Nuhrish, and I happened to love using Tofu in the place of paneer in this recipe.

Tofu is a wonder full way to add protein with lower calories especially if someone is lactose intolerant. Tofu does taste different from paneer, and many tell me that tofu turns out bland in the final dish. My key tip to making any Tofu dish is to marinate with seasoning before use. How ever this recipe works perfectly and the flavors of the freshly made kadai masala adds life to tofu.

HOW TO MAKE KADAI TOFU :

So what is ‘Kadai’ ? It is basically an indian wok, and this recipe is inspired from popular Indian side dish kadai paneer. It is a stir fry recipe made with bell peppers and onions and paneer, in this case it is Tofu.

I love how most of the indian paneer recipes can be made vegan or dairy free by simply substituting with Tofu.

In this recipe i have used fried tofu or abhura-age tofu available in japan, but any firm tofu can be used here. I would suggest lightly dusting it with plain flour and golden frying it before adding would keep the shape of the tofu intact.

You can prepare the kadai masala ahead of time and store it in an airtight container. The uniqueness of this recipe comes from the freshly roasted and ground kadai masala.

Kadai Tofu Recipe

It has to be slow roasted , cooled and ground to a fresh powder and added to the cooked tofu and the capsicum towards the end of the recipe to have the punch of the flavour. But for busy days, I like to made a quick kadai masala spice blend and works amazingly. I have used the same in the recipe.

This is a very quick recipe and one call make it in 30 minutes from start to finish. There are many ingredients in the spice blend for kadai masala. I love how kasuri methi (dry fenugreek leaves), corriander seeds and fennel seeds stand out in terms of flavour.

This recipe tastes great with indian breads such as naan, roti, phulkas, I like to serve it with Jeera Rice or Ghee rice too sometimes. I would even wrap it up in quesadilla and have it as dinner !

Notes :

You can make it into a gravy consistency, That needs a bit of tomato puree of about Half a cup before adding the veggies and adding a little more water and simmering it will help.

Dont over cook the veggies until it goes soft, this dish is meant to have a beautiful crunch from the peppers and creaminess from the tofu or paneer.
