Green Peas | Patchai pattani Kuruma is a coconut based stew cooked in onions and tomatoes masala.

Patchai Pattani translates to dry green peas. The dry green peas It is harder and starchier than that of fresh peas and can be handy when fresh peas are not available.

Green peas is a popular vegetarian protein source. It is low in fat and rich in other nutrients and fiber that make it a clean ingredient to use for meatless week-day recipes.

Though dried peas belong to the same family of beans and legumes, they are classified in a separate group due to the preparation. The fully matured pea pods are dried to get dried peas.

There are many versions of Dried peas are available in yellow, green, and red colors.

the dried green peas is a legume which is slightly higher in fibre and is said to be very good for bowl and blood sugar regulations.

Personally I love having this kuruma for dinners, serving it with 2 chapathi is very filling and nutritious too.

Ingredients required

To grind:

  • 6 tbsp Coconut grated
  • 1 tsp fennel seeds
  • 1/2 tsp poppy seeds
  • 6-7 no.s Cashews
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 3 no.s Green chillis

To make kuruma:

  • 3-4 tbsp Oil
  • 3 cloves
  • 1/2 inch cinnamon stick
  • 3 green cardamom
  • 1 star anise
  • 1 Onion (finely chopped)
  • 2 medium sized tomatoes
  • 1 tbsp Ginger garlic paste
  • 2 tsp Salt to taste
  • 1 tsp Garam masala
  • 1/4 tsp Turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp Corriander powder
  • 2 cups Cooked green peas
  • 1-2 cups Water as required

Prep work before you begin

If you are using fresh green peas, just rinse it well before use.

If you are using dry green peas, wash it and soak it over night in clean water.

Finely chop onions, Roughly chop the tomatoes, green chillies, Grate Ginger garlic if not using ready made paste.

Tips

This recipe I have used Dried green peas. So I had to soak it overnight and pressure cook before use. Incase you are using Frozen or soft green peas can be used directly in this recipe. no need for additional pressure cooking.

Just ensure to cover and cook until the peas are soft and tender.

Storage and shelf life

Usually coconut based curries, gravies and kuruma needs to be used as quick as possible, especially in hot weathers.

I would say if stored well in refrigerator it tastes good up to 2-3 days. Definitely comes handy for dinners.

Recipe Video

  • Wash and soak the dry green peas over night and pressure cook with water and salt up to 2-3 whistles.
  • Take a blender, add the ingredients mentioned under “To Grind” and 1/4 cup of water and grind to a smooth paste.
  • Heat a pan, add oil, once hot, add whole Garam Masala ( cloves, cinnamon stick, Green Cardamom, star anise) and allow it to sizzle for a few seconds.
  • Add Finely chopped onions and saute, until the onion is slightly browned.
  • Add Tomatoes, Giner Garlic paste and salt.
  • Cover and Cook until the tomatoes are softened and cooked.
  • Add the Spice powders, turmeric powder, corriander powder and cook for a good 2 minutes until the raw flavours of the masalas are gone.
  • Add the cooked green peas to the pan and mix it well.
  • Next in goes the coconut and cashew mix.
  • Adjust water to desired consistency, mix well.
  • Add Garam Masala and mix it in.
  • Check salt and add if needed.
  • Allow the kuruma to simmer for 10 minutes covered.
  • Serve hot with Chapathi or dosa.
